Background of the Study
Dietary diversity is a critical determinant of nutritional adequacy, especially for lactating mothers who require increased nutrient intake to support optimal breastfeeding and maternal health. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a diversified diet comprising essential macronutrients and micronutrients to enhance milk production and ensure maternal well-being. A diet rich in protein, vitamins, iron, and calcium is essential for both the mother and the infant.
However, dietary diversity remains a challenge among lactating mothers in Nigeria, particularly in Kogi State, where food insecurity, economic constraints, and cultural dietary habits influence food choices. Poor dietary diversity can lead to maternal malnutrition, reduced breast milk quality, and increased susceptibility to postpartum complications. Despite the importance of a well-balanced diet, there is limited empirical data on the dietary diversity of lactating mothers in Kogi State. This study aims to assess the dietary diversity among lactating mothers, identifying factors that influence their food choices and potential interventions to improve their nutritional intake.
Statement of the Problem
Lactating mothers require an adequate and diverse diet to maintain their health and support their infants' nutritional needs. However, in Kogi State, many lactating mothers consume monotonous diets that lack essential nutrients, leading to maternal depletion and poor infant nutrition. Socioeconomic factors, cultural beliefs, and inadequate nutritional knowledge contribute to poor dietary diversity, exacerbating the risks of malnutrition. Despite the significance of dietary diversity, there is a gap in research assessing the dietary habits of lactating mothers in Kogi State. This study seeks to appraise the dietary diversity among lactating mothers, providing evidence-based recommendations to improve their nutritional intake.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of dietary diversity among lactating mothers in Kogi State.
To identify factors influencing dietary diversity among lactating mothers.
To recommend strategies for improving dietary diversity among lactating mothers.
Research Questions
What is the level of dietary diversity among lactating mothers in Kogi State?
What factors influence the dietary choices of lactating mothers?
What strategies can enhance dietary diversity among lactating mothers?
Research Hypotheses
Poor dietary diversity among lactating mothers is associated with maternal malnutrition.
Socioeconomic factors significantly influence dietary diversity among lactating mothers.
Nutrition education interventions improve dietary diversity among lactating mothers.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on lactating mothers in Kogi State, examining their dietary habits and factors influencing their food choices. Limitations include reliance on self-reported dietary data and variations in seasonal food availability.
